HIPPY South Africa
HIPPY South Africa works with vulnerable families who otherwise have no access to early childhood services. Two model sites operate in the Gauteng Province: in Winterveldt (peri-urban traditional villages) and Diepsloot (urban-informal settlements). While most HIPPY programmes across the world directly target children preparing to go to school, the South African programme also supports families with younger children who are unable to enter formal early childhood programmes. It provides all families with extensive social support, and, where necessary, home-based palliative care. The two sites service 360 families in total.
HIPPY South Africa also works with partner organisations running HIPPY programmes within their social service offering. In 2012, three additional programmes will be implemented by two community-based service organisations – Afrika Tikkun and The Trevor Huddleston Memorial Centre. Together these partner organisations serve 240 families through the HIPPY programme.
